Despite the popular adage, “black don’t crack,” experts say that people of all skin tones need to pay attention to their skin care routine. Even black and brown skin can be damaged due to external environmental factors, such as sun exposure, poor nutrition, and neglecting to perform a regular skincare routine.

According to Charles Boyd, MD, a Michigan-based board certified plastic surgeon, individuals of all ages, races, and ethnicities are enlisting the help of plastic surgeons for cosmetic enhancement and approval.

In today’s selfie-obsessed world, there are no longer any taboos or reservations regarding plastic surgery. While cosmetic procedures used to be accessible only to celebrities and Beverly Hills residents, they have become quite affordable and more common as ever.

But before going under the knife, Dr. Boyd believes that women of color should employ more non-invasive techniques.

“One can enhance their appearance with botox and cosmetic fillers,” Dr. Boyd told NBC News.

For many, signs of aging are often a genetic inclination. For example, if your mother had bags under her eyes, it’s likely you will too. These bags can luckily be remedied with fillers that are performed directly in the office, with almost zero downtime.

The best way to ensure that darker complexion skin stays youthful and healthy? Dr. Boyd says that developing a skincare routine early on can help prevent the appearance of aging. This includes a well-rounded routine, including everything from cleansing, to exfoliating, to moisturizing and tightening.

For African American skin, the mnemonic term GRASS should be remembered: Growth factors, Retin A, Antioxidants, Sunscreen, and Special Products. Retin A creams are one of the most powerful prescription anti-aging topical creams available on the market today.

And for the 85% of individuals that suffer from acne at some point in their life, Retin A is also known for its acne mitigating properties.
